BIOL 0143: Computational Theory of Molecular Evolution

  • BIOL 0143: Computational Theory of Molecular Evolution (Odd years only)
    Instructor: Daniel Weinreich
    Time and Place: Course Schedule

DNA stores information just like your computer does, and Darwin’s theory of evolution has strong similarities to a computer program.

Students will explore these connections and develop an appreciation for how different computational elements of biology influence molecular evolution. Lectures will introduce intellectual traditions fromcomputer science and evolutionary biology, and will be complemented by a series of computer labs to build first-hand understanding.

Prerequisites: an introduction to evolution (e.g. Bio 20 or 48) or to computer science (e.g. CS 15, 16 or 17), or permission of instructor. No programming is expected. Grading: ABC/NC. For more information view the Course Catalog.
