Journal of Modern Italian Studies

Notes for book reviewers

Normally, the editors expect a review of 750 to 1,000 words. Review essays, especially reviews that treat more than one work or discuss a number of recent books on a given topic, may be longer, but it is important that this be negotiated with one of the editors in anticipo.

The review should describe the book's content and organization and present your assessment of its contributions to relevant fields of Italian studies, evaluating its major strengths and weaknesses in the process. (If you feel that the work makes little or no contribution to any field of Italian studies, please notify the editors so they can decide whether or not the book should be reviewed at all.)

Reviews may be submitted in English or Italian, but in any case please observe the following guidelines:

  • Bibliographic information should be placed at the head of the text, and should include: author, complete title, place of publication, publisher, date of publication, number of pages, ISBN, price, hardback/softback.

  • Your name and institutional affiliation should be placed at the bottom of the text.

  • With rare exception, reviews should not contain references or footnotes. If it is essential to refer to another publication, the reference should be included in parentheses in the text.

Please send the completed text, typed or printed double-spaced with 1 inch margins left and right to:
