The above statement
is true in general. However, it concerns teaching
literature most of all, since here the new media
not only provide a new space for perception, but
also a new subject. This distinguishes the teaching
of literature from that of chemistry or physics,
whose equations and laws can be easily illustrated
and animated on the net, but do not thereby change.
In terms of literature the net not only presents
traditional texts in a new way (i.e. Goethe or
Shakespeare with images and hypertextual
references) but also brings about a totally new
aesthetics of literature: A multilinear,
interactive, animated word-image-sound
alliance.
Digital literature
challenges our modes of perception. Just as this
novel form of literature demands new skills on the
part of the authors, it requires new abilities from
the readers as well. What is the meaning of an
image that literally moves through the text? How
does one read a word that fades out or makes noise?
And if, for instance, the length of time a given
file can remain on the screen is determined ahead
of time by the author, what implications does this
have for the reading process?
Investigating these
questions is the aim of this journal. However, in
order to learn what digital literature is and how
to read it you do not necessarily have to visit our
website. We can visit you. Wherever you are, at
whichever school, university or institution, we can
bring digital literature to you. We offer the
following lectures on the aesthetics and pedagogy
of digital literature:
The lectures last
about one hour. They consist of text and slides
(HTML-files with text, images, videoclips) to
illustrate the topics. A data projector or computer
pool with enough terminals will be needed. To
