Cheers from the Managers!
Greetings from the BOLT Office! It’s been another busy and exciting year in the life of BOLT, as we continue to try and improve the program while still holding on to all the traditions and principles that have made BOLT what it is for the last nineteen years.
This year started out in typical BOLT fashion—rather chaotically. As managers, we were a somewhat jumbled and exhausted group. Two of us had just finished organizing the fall trip as summer managers, and although there is no such thing as too much BOLT, it's fair to say that after pulling off that feat a little well-deserved break was needed. Meanwhile, the other two of us were coming straight out of equally busy summers and tiring, though exhilarating, BOLT trips, and we didn't even have a fourth manager until several weeks into the semester.
Despite this hectic beginning, once the dream team that is now YFBMs came together, everything started to fall into place and our usual fall activities were as big a success as usual. BOLT Wars took place on a beautiful fall morning, complete with several hours of drinking water out of dirty boots, one overexcited BOLTer who tried to participate in the event shirtless, and a giant game of “Yeehaw.” A week later we upheld another BOLT tradition with the annual slideshow, with the whole BOLT community gathering in Salomon 001 to view pictures of stunning views and stunning BOLTers.
In addition to these time-honored events, we also added a couple of new and exciting [EVENTS] to the BOLT Calendar. One of the major questions we have been dealing with this fall is what shape the Year Round Program should take, and while we know we can't fully answer this question in just one semester, we hope that we have begun to pave the way for a more cohesive understanding of this aspect of BOLT. Accordingly, in late October, we tried to tap into the vast pool of wisdom and experience that BOLT Leaders possess by organizing an evening of BAM: BOLT Advising Madness. BAM offered a group of enthusiastic BOLT Leaders a chance to pass on their knowledge of courses, concentrations, studying abroad, etc to underclassman while drinking hot chocolate and throwing Halloween candy at one another. All in all, we emerged from the night feeling that it not only served the needs of our BOLTers but also that it helped to foster and demonstrate how much fun we BOLT Leaders have when we get together.
This was not the only new addition to our calendar. Earlier in the fall, we organized a BOLT Leader Reunion to allow Leaders the chance to eat ice cream, catch up, and check-in. We also put on a JOLT for BOLT Open Mic Night and Silent Auction at the Hourglass Cafe as part of the efforts of our new fundraising committee, an evening of merriment and good music in which we raised $360 for the BOLT Scholarship Fund. Additionally, we know that individual BOLT groups have continued to have many exciting endeavors and adventures on their own.
Despite, or perhaps because of all this craziness, we look forward with excitement and anticipation to a spring that promises to be even busier as we launch into another round of trainings and the exhilaration of getting to know a whole new batch of spectacular BOLT Leaders. Our calendar for the spring is already quite full, and while it is certainly a little daunting at times, it is nonetheless somewhat comforting to know that life is never boring with BOLT around.
