Dear Sophomore Student,
You may be aware that during the first 5 weeks of the Spring semester, the Greek community at Brown conducts an intensive recruitment effort called Rush. Some of your friends last year may have rushed and eventually pledged Greek houses. We wanted to let you know that many students join Greek houses in their sophomore year, and we encourage you to come by our events and see what Greek life has to offer you.
Specifically, Rush involves the 6 fraternities, 2 sororities and 2 co-ed houses that comprise the Greek system throw a variety of weeknight events during the month of February, ranging from movie nights to open mics, crafts and culinary tutorials to concerts and poetry readings.
Many students come to Brown with preconceived notions of Greek life, taken from popular culture and reports from older friends and siblings. We certainly had negative impressions of fraternities and sororities before arriving at Brown. However, we soon found that the stereotypical image of Greek life is off-target, especially at a school as diverse and intellectually engaging as Brown. In our time at Brown, we have had the pleasure of meeting and befriending members of all ten houses, almost all of whom are serious students and creative, independent thinkers, firmly committed to their fellow-members and the community at large.
Greek life isn't for everyone, but for many Brown students membership in a Greek house offers a tight-knit and vibrant community experience as an ideal complement to Brown’s stimulating academic life. Rush is a great time to get to know students in Greek life and feel out which houses might be right for you.
Rush booklets containing the information on each house and a full schedule of the Rush events can be found in the Ratty, Faunce, and other prominent places around campus. The same information can be found on this website.
We hope you'll consider visiting us on Wriston Quad in the coming weeks. Please contact us with any questions you may have about Rush or the Greek experience in general.
Sincerely,
