HIV Testing

Testing for exposure to HIV requires a blood test or a newly-approved test of saliva. For a more thorough discussion of AIDS/HIV-Infection, reasons to consider testing, and a listing of test sites, go to the HIV testing information on the Health Education Web site, read the pamphlets about AIDS and HIV testing available at Health Services, or contact one of the resources listed below.

ANONYMOUS OR CONFIDENTIAL?
Anonymous testing means that you never give your name and there is no way your name and test results can be connected.
Confidential testing means your name is kept in a medical record, although there are legal restrictions on who can see your results. In deciding where to get tested, think about who might know your test results and what that would mean.

HIV TESTING AT HEALTH SERVICES

For Brown University students there is a $25. fee to be paid by check or money order or we can bill your student Bursar's account.

Call for an appointment during daytime hours. Blood can be drawn at Health Services. R.I. law requires all samples to be tested at the state lab; the blood is sent (by code number, no name) to the R.I. Department of Health lab for testing.

This testing is confidential but not anonymous; for medical and legal reasons we are required to enter into your medical record any medical test we perform on you as a patient. Please read the section in this brochure on confidentiality of medical records; you may release your medical records to another provider without releasing HIV test information.

If you need test results verified for employment or overseas travel, discuss this with your provider.
