Meiklejohn Peer Advisor Application

Apply to be a Meiklejohn Peer Advisor.

Application FAQ

How do I apply to be a Meiklejohn?
All application materials must be submitted online through the Meiklejohn website. Materials sent through email attachments or on paper will not be considered.

What does the application involve?
The application includes questions about your academic interests and several short essay questions. You are also asked to write a letter of introduction to your potential advisees. You will be able to save the application as you go and work on it over the course of several days. New applicants to the program will need 2 short letters of recommendation. Veterans must provide a letter of recommendation from a current first-year advisee.

Who can write me a letter of recommendation?
Rookie applicants are required to provide two letters of recommendation, one of which must be written by a Brown community member. Academic advisors, course instructors, deans, program directors, and coaches are all appropriate references. One letter of recommendation may come from a high school teacher, mentor, or guidance counselor, or a past or current employer.

Veteran applicants must provide a letter of recommendation from a current first-year advisee.

Do I need to interview?
All rookie applicants are required to complete a 30-minute interview. Veteran applicants do not need to interview as part of the re-application process.

Can I apply to be a Meiklejohn if I'm also interested in becoming a RPL, MPC, etc?
Training programs for RPLs, MPCs, and other peer advisors often conflict with mandatory meetings for Meiklejohn training. You are welcome to submit an application for more than one peer advising or mentoring program. If you are accepted into another peer advising program, please notify us by email. We will contact you once training dates have been set if scheduling conflicts arise. Applying to other peer advising programs will not hurt your chances of acceptance to the Meiklejohn Program.

Can I apply to be a Meiklejohn if I'm going abroad for one semester next year?
Yes, you can! Please indicate which semester you plan to be abroad in the appropriate section of the application. If you are accepted to the Meiklejohn Program, we will work to pair you with a "Co-Meik" who will work with your advising group in the semester you're away. Letting us know that you're planning on going abroad will not hurt your chances of acceptance to the program.

How are Meiklejohns and first-year advisors matched?
Meiklejohns are assigned to faculty and staff first-year advisors by the Advising Team in the Dean of the College Office. When making assignments, the Advising Team attempts to give the first-year students in each advising group a variety of perspectives on academic life at Brown. For that reason, you may be paired with an advising partner from a discipline with which you have little experience.

If a faculty or staff member has told you that he or she would like you to serve as his or her Meiklejohn, please note that in the appropriate portion application form. We will notify the advisor to confirm this information. We do our best to accommodate first-year advisors who request specific Meiklejohns as their advising partners.

What if I don't know how to advise other students on academic matters?
Don't worry! All Meiklejohns go through a mandatory training session each semester. If you are accepted to the program, we will email you about training dates and times.

How do I confirm my participation in the Meiklejohn Program?
Successful applicants are notified of their acceptance via email and given access to the online confirmation form. The deadline to confirm participation in the Meiklejohn Program in the 2012-2013 academic year is Wednesday, March 21. Those who are interested in being considered for a position on the Meiklejohn leadership should send their application materials to Meiklejohn@brown.edu by March 19.
