Building Understanding Across Differences

Building Understanding Across Differences (BUAD) offers students a challenging opportunity to build community and leadership based upon ongoing dialogue, interaction, and outreach across cultural experiences and group identities, including:  race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexual identity, ability, and religious affiliation.  Participants gain valuable experience and skills in exploring the complexity of personal social identities in relation to diversity, pluralism, power, privilege, and disadvantage at Brown and beyond.  BUAD brings students, staff, and faculty together to interact and explore these relationships in depth and from multiple perspectives.

A combination of special annual events and small group discussions that take place during the school year comprise the BUAD experience. BUAD kicks off each year with a workshop for incoming students before Orientation begins. This workshop will take place Saturday, August 30, 2008 from 12-4 p.m. and will accept 60-80 incoming students.

What students have to say about BUAD:

  • The value of the BUAD mission is that it is not limited to a certain type
    of student.
  • BUAD made me think about issues I may not have otherwise. It also helped
    in my transition to Brown.
  • I got to meet deans and faculty members in my first year through BUAD.
