Residential Council Minutes: February 15, 2010

South Wayland Lounge

Present: Kristina von Gerichten, Cody Shulman, Evan Holownia, Chaz Kelsh, Emily Gould, Courtney Mannino, Jerry Cedrone, Sam Barney, Daniel Hyman, Sophie Asher, Travis Spangler, Andrew Tran

Absent: Sara Sunshine, Brandon Broome (on leave)

Meeting began at 12:04 pm

1. Jerry proposed change to bylaws
- Alternate position has not been used on the council since 2008; expand size of council to 15 members
- Could decide to fill vacancies during year

2. Vice President Margaret Klawunn provided current update on 315 Thayer renovations
- Decided need new building
- Renovation: plan to create first-year communties, Keeney and Pembroke (move freshmen out of Perkins) and create sophomore-only housing
- New constructon for juniors and seniors more on the periphery, leading towards off-campus
- Would serve to eliminate individual junior rooms in Keeney that are isolated
- Would need to fundraise for the new residence hall
- Floorplans of 315 Thayer basement
- Suites will use the suite rate; singles will be at standard rate
- Bike rack accessible from outside by ramp to begin solving campus-wide bike problem
- Singles will be large
- Studio apartment for visiting lecturer or GAF
- May initiate expansion of the v-dub; increase footprint of seating area to handle more people
- Also asking for renovation of Ratty to create more food-court setup; v-dub model on larger scale
- Concern that changing Pembroke to freshmen may isolate upperclassmen in 315 Thayer - Minden would provide continuity down to upperclassmen region; also could place new residence hall there
- More graduate students could be given woodframe structures so that all of Metcalf/Miller could be undergrad
- Also considering use of woodframe structures for undergraduates; Plantations house, 111 Brown, West House. Not wheelchair accessible, but new housing (315 Thayer, possible Minden renovation etc.) will be accessible.
- Juniors/seniors who do not want to pay suite fee -- need to leave that open
