The Brown University New Scientist Program

Background:

If you look around, you’ll undoubtedly notice the dearth of underrepresented minority students in the sciences.  We believe this can be changed for the better, and in response we introduce the New Scientist Program!  This program will inform students of the many resources available on and off campus to enrich their collegiate academic experience.  It will serve as a liaison between academic departments and students as well as a liaison between other minority and majority academic organizations on campus.

Mission: To help increase academic excellence among underrepresented minority undergraduates at Brown University concentrating in engineering, math, or science.

Goals:

  • Improve the academic performance of the underrepresented minority undergraduate concentrating in engineering, math, or science.
  • Increase the recruitment and retention rate of underrepresented minority undergraduates concentrating in engineering, math, and science.
  • Increase interest among underrepresented minority students in pursuing post-bachelor degrees in the areas of engineering, math, and science.

 Potential Program Offerings:

  • Academic Workshops
  • Study Groups/Tutorial Services
  • Motivational Speakers
  • Faculty/Graduate Student/Undergraduate Student Mixers
  • Forums/Focus Groups
