Call for stories on diversity
Hi everyone! My name is Joseph Rosales and I'm a senior staff writer for the Brown Daily Herald. For the past two semesters, I have mainly focused on writing stories involving diversity on campus. Last semester, I wrote on Latinos at Brown and the WPC program, among other topics. I am really interested in getting as many stories about the rich diversity we have on campus out there to the general public. If you have any suggestions or ideas for stories or people I should talk to, please don't hesitate to email me (joseph_rosales@brown.edu) or call (323-202-3676). Thank you very much, and have a good rest of the day.

Women's Leadership Conference: 120 Years of Women at Brown
When: May 4-5, 2012
Where: Brown University
In the fall of 1891, six exceptional women climbed College Hill to begin their university education...
120 years later, we are honoring the accomplishments of generations of Brown and Pembroke women—abolitionists, suffragists, philanthropists, geophysicists, actresses, judges, and economists—who have changed not only the nature of higher education, but society itself.
Our alumnae have gone from the Colgate Hoyt Pool to the Olympic ring ceremony, from Barrett Hazeltine’s engineering class to the National Commission on Energy Policy, from the campus literary magazine to the National Book Critics’ Circle Award.
During their time at Brown, each of them helped to make the University the dynamic, inclusive institution we know today, and each of them has a story to tell.
Join us from May 4 – 5, 2012, when the Conference Steering Committee and the members of the Women’s Leadership Council will welcome alumnae back to campus for the Women’s Leadership Conference: 120 Years of Women at Brown.

Brown University Fulbright Fellow Maryam Alkhawaja’s Father Imprisoned, Close to Death
WHAT: Bahraini activist and prisoner of conscience Abdulhadi Alkhawaja has been on a hunger strike since the night of February 8th/9th to protest against the human rights violations of the Bahraini government, including his own life sentence for his role in the pro-democracy movement in Bahrain. His health is rapidly deteriorating, and he is close to death. The Foreign Minister of Denmark has made the specific request for Alkhawaja to be released to Denmark on humanitarian grounds, so that he can receive treatment both for the effects of the hunger strike and the ongoing pain inflicted on him as a result of the constant torture he suffers during his detention. However, as of April 8th, a supreme judicial council official said the proposed transfer of the prisoner did not meet the "specific conditions" required for such a move. Our only hope is that enough international pressure will be placed on the government of Bahrain that they will reconsider this decision.
Abdulhadi Alkhawaja is well known as a human rights defender, and his work to support other human rights activists and victims of abuse is highly respected around the world. His conviction in a Bahraini court has been deemed unfair by the very panel the state empowered to review the cases that were brought before the National Safety Court.
His daughter Maryam Alkhawaja was a Fulbright fellow at Brown University. For many of us, she is our friend and fellow organizer for Brown Students for Justice in Palestine. Others will remember her as their TA in the Arabic Department, or from the several times she has been invited to speak at Brown University. Regardless, we can use this critical moment to unite in solidarity with our brave colleague and her father, who is in dire need of our help. Please take the following actions immediately and forward this email widely!
WHAT YOU CAN DO: (the following actions were taken from the Front Line Defenders website)
1) Sign the new petition to US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for Abdulhadi's freedom: Click here for the petition.
2) Sign the new petition by BCHR for Abdulhadi's freedom: Click here for the petition.
3) Write to the King of Bahrain. Click here for a sample letter to print & send.
4) Contact a Bahraini Embassy. Here is the website with contact information for the Bahraini embassy in Washington DC: http://www.mofa.gov.bh/Default.aspx?tabid=7677 You can use this text for addressing the ambassador or political officer.
5) Contact the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs. To contact Mr. Willy Sovndal, visit the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Denmark website: http://um.dk/en/about-us/the-ministers/the-minister-of-foreign-affairs/. Contact the Danish Minister of Foreign Affairs. Please express your gratitude for the Minister’s efforts to release Abdulhadi Al-Khawaja from prison in Bahrain and encourage him to maintain the pressure on the government of Bahrain.
6) Tweet! Tell your friends and colleagues to tweet for Abdulhadi, and increase the social media presence of Abdulhadi’s hunger strike. Follow Maryam Alkhawaja to stay updated.
