Job Description and Expectations

MPC Coordinators are experienced mentors from the MPC Program, who work with the Program Director to provide leadership and support to the MPC program.  The role of the MPC Coordinators is one of support, coordination, and supervision.  MPC Coordinators are expected to work closely with each other, the Program Director and other professional staff to carry out the expectations listed below: 

Philosophical
  • To create a sense of community and support among MPCs.
  • To help each MPC develop an effective and accessible peer mentoring style.
  • To help MPCs increase their sensitivity to the various factors that may impact student’s experiences at Brown and to be aware of how a wide range of issues, including, but not limited to, race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, religious identification, and nationality impact individuals and our community.  MPC Coordinators encourage MPCs to foster honest and compassionate dialogue within the residential community and to address problems of discrimination, harassment, and intolerance.
  • To help MPCs learn about themselves through the experience of mentoring. 
  • To support MPCs in their efforts to work cooperatively and effectively with other Residential and non-residential programs.
  • To work in partnership with the MPC Program Director to provide appropriate supervision of MPCs, ensuring that MPCs are fulfilling their job responsibilities in an appropriate and ethical way.
  • To work in partnership with the MPC Program Director to provide leadership, guidance, and direction for the MPC program.
  • To take advantage of the opportunities for personal growth and development provided by the MPCC experience.
Specific Job Responsibilities

The MPC Coordinator position will require exceptional time and energy.  In all these endeavors, MPC Coordinators may rely on a variety of resources for guidance and support including: the Program Director, Deans of the College, OSL staff, Health Services, Psychological Services, and the Chaplains Office.

1.  Facilitate weekly or bimonthly "MPC Small Group" meetings.

  • Conduct Small Group meetings on a weekly or bimonthly basis.
  • Ensure that MPCs know the time and location of the meetings.
  • Ensure that MPCs attend the meetings.
  • Follow-up with MPCs who do not attend small-group meetings.
  • Inform Program Director of any concerns or issues that arise during small group meetings. This may pertain to individual MPCs, unit-based situations or counseling/working group teams.
  • Work with Program Director to plan and provide any training that may be relevant and possible in small-group setting.

2.  Participate in regular meetings for the MPC Program.

  • Attend weekly meetings with Program Director.
  • Attend monthly General Body Meetings with all MPCs.
  • Attend supervisory meetings with Program Director.

3.  Plan and implement MPC training throughout the year.

  • Coordinators will be responsible for planning and presenting Fall training sessions and logistics related to this training.
  • Coordinators will be responsible for assisting with the planning and presentation of any ongoing training in small group and monthly MPC meetings.
  • Coordinators will participate in Spring Training for MPCs.

4. Provide administrative help and programmatic support to the MPC Program and the Program Director.

  • Participate in MPC Friends Selection.
  • Participate in MPC Selection.
  • Participate in MPC evaluation.
  • Participate in program evaluation.
  • Participate in any MPC-driven initiatives.
  • Compile all evaluations and documentation for MPC workshops.
  • Any other administrative tasks related to the MPC program.
  • Supervise and Support Minority Peer Counselors
  • Supervise and support MPCs through small groups and on an individual basis.
  • Provide support to MPCs outside of small group settings.
  • Work with Program Director to identify support resources for MPCs individually and for their counseling work.
  • Work with Program Director to provide appropriate referrals to resources on campus, if needed.
  • Work with Program Director to identify and provide academic support to MPCs, if needed.

6. Provide coordinating support during TWTP and serve as part of the leadership team. Coordinators are expected to uphold:

  • the Tenets of Community Behavior,
  • the Ethical Code for Peer Counselors, and
  • the Standards of Student Conduct.

Coordinators may not obtain or consume alcohol and/or drugs with any Counselors.

Coordinators may not have romantic/sexual relationships with any Minority Peer Counselors. Violation of the aforementioned will result in termination of employment.
