Brown University's Career Development Center

Please serve on the 2007-08 Black History Series Steering committee!
We are the Black History Series programmers for the year 2008. Previously our predecessors had the Black History month within which a number of events were organized. This year however, for the first time we are looking to having a yearlong series of events that will deal with contemporary and historical issues pertaining to sociopolitical and cultural issues facing the people within Africa and peoples of African descent in the Diaspora.

In this light we are trying to get an implementation group together who will work closely with us as programmers in getting ideas for events, speakers and raising awareness on campus concerning the important work we are doing. This group would also help us form a close network with the many student organizations and faculty on campus that will be valuable assets to the Series.

Through this Black History Series we seek to:
1. Highlight both the commonalities and the diversity found in Blackness
2. Educate the Brown and local Providence communities on (pan)-African history and culture
3. Examine class, gender, and LGBTQQ issues as they intersect with African and African-descended peoples
4. Explore the correlations between education and Black identity.

Your ideas and input would be valuable to making this Series truly representative of the many interests in shedding light on issues facing Africans and Peoples of African descent.

If you are interested in planning and participating in this very exciting project for the upcoming year, we would like to hear from you and meet up soon to get the ball rolling! Please respond via email Darnell Fine ‘08 (Darnell_Fine@brown.edu) or Nungari Mwangi ’10 (Evelyn_Mwangi@brown.edu)  and return to us with 3 or 4 available times you can meet with us. Thanks in advance for your time and interest!!

2008 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program
The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation ( http://www.kff.org/ ) is accepting applications for the 2008 Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program. This opportunity is for college seniors and recent college graduates who have a strong interest in addressing racial and ethnic health disparities, or who are themselves a member of a population that is adversely affected by racial and ethnic health disparities.

During their nine-week experience, the scholars work in congressional offices in Washington, D.C., obtaining first-hand experience in the policy-making process and participating in seminars and site visits to enhance their practical knowledge of healthcare issues. Each scholar also writes and presents a health policy research paper in one of the following areas: Medicaid and the uninsured, Medicare, or HIV/AIDS.

Eligible candidates must be U.S. citizens who will be seniors or recent graduates of an accredited U.S. college or university in the fall of 2008. Individuals with an advanced degree and those individuals currently enrolled in an advanced degree program are not eligible to participate. Candidates are selected based on academic performance, demonstrated leadership potential, and interest in health issues that disproportionately affect racial and ethnic minorities or underserved communities. Scholars receive roundtrip transportation to Washington, a stipend, and housing at Howard University for the duration of the program.

Application materials and more information are available at the KFF Web site.

Call for Proposals: Tenth Annual Women's History Month Conference

*Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, NY (15 minutes north of Manhattan)
*Friday-Saturday March 7-8, 2008
*Free and open to the public

*Black Power, Black Feminism: Black Women's Activism and Development of Womanist/Feminist Consciousness in the Era Black Power.
Keynote Speaker: Chana Kai Lee, author of For Freedom's Sake: The Life of Fannie Lou Hamer

Traditionally scholarship on the Black Power era has characterized this time of renewed cultural and political nationalism and activism as an almost exclusively male domain. This has begun to change. Not only have scholars uncovered a long tradition of black women's activism before and during the Black Power era, but they have begun reevaluating the entire era as a result. Part and parcel with this period of activism has been the development of a Black feminist consciousness. If scholars have seen the seeds of this consciousness far earlier, the sixties and seventies were notable for organizing that recognized inextricable and complicated ties between categories of race class and gender.

This conference seeks to sustain and enhance new scholarship that redefines the era, bringing the work and effort of women to the center.
We invite scholars, artists, writers, and activists to submit proposals for papers, readings, workshops, and performances. Proposals for full panels are especially welcomed.

Topics may include but are not limited to:
- Women's local and national grassroots organizing
- Women in the Black Arts Movement
- Women and Nationalism
- Women's participation in Black Power organizations
- Revolutionary Black Feminism
- Coalition building amongst women of color
- Legacies of Black feminist organizing: third wave and hip hop feminism

*Please send a brief abstract and c.v./resume to:

Spend This Summer Empowering Low Wage Workers!

Across North America, hotel workers are rising - organizing to lift one another out of poverty. Housekeepers, dishwashers, cooks are standing together to win the right to organize a union and improve their lives.

LEARN UNION ORGANIZING SKILLS WITH ONE OF NORTH AMERICA'S MOST PROGRESSIVE AND SUCCESSFUL UNIONS!

UNITE HERE is a progressive labor organization, representing approximately 440,000 workers in the hotel, textiles, industrial laundry, gaming and food service industries in North America. These service industries employ large numbers of women, recent immigrants and people of color. UNITE HERE is committed to raising the living standards of the people who do some of the most "invisible" work in North America: the workers who clean hotel rooms, wash hospital sheets and serve food in cafeterias and airports.

Innovative organizing campaigns and our strong training program make UNITE HERE an exciting place to create change and empower the disenfranchised workers in these industries. UNITE HERE will be conducting a 6 week paid summer internship for passionate student leaders who will spend their summer in the struggle for justice. Internship sites are located in major cities across the U.S. and Canada. There will be classroom training followed by 6 weeks in the field. A weekly stipend will be given for working long hard hours. Participants are responsible for their own housing.

There will be 2 independent sessions;
Session 1 - June 2 through July 11th
Session 2 - July 21 through August 29th

Participate in an exciting opportunity to work on important union organizing campaigns to empower service sector workers across the country. For more information about UNITE HERE go to www.unitehere.org. For more information about UNITE HERE' s Summer Internship 2008 contact summerinternship@unitehere.org.
