TWTP FAQS
Q: What’s in store for TWTP participants?
A: Some of the activities planned for the weekend include: workshops and discussions surrounding issues of community and identity (such as racism, sexism, classism, heterosexism/homophobia, imperialism, Third World identity and Third World history at Brown), and opportunities to meet and talk with several of Brown’s Deans, Administrators, and Faculty. In addition, participants will have a chance to relax and acquaint themselves with new friends, as well as enjoy social activities, which include a casual party, field games, bowling, barbeques and more!
Q: Are there any activities for my parents?
A: Yes. There will be an Informational Session and a Presidential Welcome Dinner for parents and students on August 26th. We will post a schedule of events online as soon as possible and will provide a concrete and detailed schedule in your registration packet.
Q: I’m a student athlete and I have training; can I still participate in TWTP?
A: Of course. If you want to come to any TWTP activities during your free time, you are more than welcome. At the Office of Residential Life, we will give you a schedule so you know where we are at all times! You should also alert the MPC in your unit of your schedule.
Q: What if I need to come a day early or late?
A: Coming a day late is no problem, but please indicate your arrival date on your registration form. We CANNOT provide transportation for arrivals after August 26th. When you arrive at Wayland Arch, a student will be there to greet you and help with luggage.
Q: What time should I arrive at Brown?
A: On August 26th, program check-in begins at 9:00 a.m. at the Office of Residential Life. Late registration on August 26th is from 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. On August 27th late registration is from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Third World Center, 68 Brown Street. Someone will be there to meet you and help with your luggage.
Q: How do I get to Brown?
A: Directions are available on Brown’s homepage at www.brown.edu., or refer to this brochure. Parents who require parking can park at the Power Street Parking Complex located directly across from the Fire station on Brook Street between Power St. and Williams St.
Q: Where do I go once I’m on campus?
A: Your first stop should be the Office of Residential Life, which is located in Wayland Arch at the corner of Brown and George Streets. The staff at Residential Life will give you your permanent room key and TWTP staff will be there to check you in to the program. Participants should then go to their permanent rooms and unpack any clothing, toiletries, and other necessities to be used during TWTP. Although you will be staying in your permanent room, please do not completely unpack and arrange your room without your roommate present. This will help participants avoid potential roommate conflicts once the non-participant arrives for Orientation. MPCs and MPC Friends will be available to help you carry your belongings to your rooms.
Q: What should I bring to TWTP?
A: You may want to pack a separate bag for the three days of the program if your relative or guardian will be helping you move into your room after TWTP ends. If so, you should include toiletries, flip-flops for the shower, pajamas, a robe, underwear, socks, sneakers, and sandals.
Q: Do I need any money?
A: Meals are provided by the program through dinner on Friday, August 29th and the University meal plan starts with breakfast on Saturday, August 30, 2008 (Orientation begins on Sunday). You will need at the most $10 for the bowling trip and all other alternative activities will be free!
Q: Are there services and accommodations available for students with disabilities?
A: Students with disabilities can contact Disability Support Services (DSS) at 401-863-9588 or dss@brown.edu. The office is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. DSS serves students with physical, psychological, sensory and learning disabilities. Please contact the DSS office as soon as possible (preferably before July 2, 2007) and well in advance of the need for an accommodation.
