Job Description and Expectations

MPC Coordinators (MPCCs) are experienced mentors from the MPC Program, who work with the Assistant Director for First & Second Year Programs to provide leadership and support to the MPC program. The role of the MPC Coordinators is one of support, coordination, and mentorship. MPC Coordinators are expected to work closely with each other, the Program Director and other professional staff to carry out the expectations listed below:

Leadership

  • Work in partnership with the Assistant Director for First & Second Year Programs to ensure that MPCs are fulfilling their job responsibilities in an appropriate, ethical way.

MPC Support and Community Building

  • Help each MPC develop an effective and accessible peer mentoring style.
  • Be aware of how a wide range of issues, including but not limited to race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, religious identification, and nationality have an impact individuals and our community.
  • Support MPCs in their efforts to work collaboratively and effectively with other residential and non-residential programs.

Campus Resource

  • Foster honest and compassionate dialogue within the residential community.
  • Address problems of discrimination, harassment, and intolerance.
  • Uphold the reputation and respect of the TWC and MPC Program within the greater Brown community.
  • Reach out to senior level administrators and faculty to improve and further the MPC program

Qualified candidates must:

  • Be a rising Junior or Senior.
  • Have previously worked as an MPC.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to serving as a mentor and resource to the MPCs.
  • Be able to serve for at least one full semester.
  • Be in good academic and judicial standing.

Compensation:

  • Transferable managerial skills to "real world" career opportunities, leadership development, extensive training in the areas of group facilitation, student development, social justice and activism, and an opportunity to work on a talented team.
  • Stipend: $3,000 per year. Stipend amount may vary depending on length of service.

Training:

MPCCs will participate in a Spring Training prepared by the TWC professional staff in advance of preparing and hosting the MPC Spring training. MPCCs will also learn about the expectations of their position.


Time Commitment and Availability:

MPCCs are required to meet for:

  • MPC selection during the spring semester.
  • Monthly general body meetings with the MPCs and the TWC staff.
  • Bi-weekly small group meetings with their MPCs (reserve up to one hour).
  • Bi-weekly family meetings with the TWTPCs and MPC Friends (reserve up to 2 hours).
  • Weekly meetings with the Assistant Director for First & Second Year Programs and TWC Staff (reserve up to an hour).
  • Bi-weekly meetings with the TWTPCs to prepare the agenda for family meetings (reserve up to an hour).
  • Meet as needed with MPC working groups to assist in the development of workshops.
  • MPC training sessions and the Third World Transition Program (scheduled xxx to xxx).
  • Please be advised that based on the needs of the program, you may be required to participate in additional meetings, training sessions and training sessions that require use of your time.

Specific Job Responsibilities

The MPC Coordinator position will require exceptional TIME, ENERGY and PATIENCE. MPC Coordinators can rely on a variety of resources for guidance and support in all their endeavors. This includes the TWC, Residential Life, the Deans of the College, OSL staff, Health Services, Psychological Services, and the Office of the Chaplain and Religious Life.


SPRING & SUMMER -

1. Participate in MPC Selection & Placement

  • Assist with MPC selection and housing assignments for the following academic year.
  • Work with a team of TWC staff, other student leaders, and officials in the Office of Residential Life in order to fulfill this responsibility successfully.

2. Participate in MPCC Spring Training

  • Participate in Spring Training with the TWC staff before organizing Spring Training for new MPCs.
  • Learn about their Spring and Summer expectations during this training.

3. Plan & implement socials for new MPCs

  • During the Spring semester, the MPCCs are responsible for planning and implementing any socials to build community among the new MPCs. This may be a part of or separate from Spring Training. This includes, but is not limited to,
    • Social with current MPCs
    • Social with new RPLs
    • Social with new MPC Frien

4. Summer Obligations

  • Provide coordinating support before and during TWTP and serve as part of the leadership team
  • Work with the TWTPCs in planning joint Fall training for MPCs and MPC Friends.
  • Develop n strong working relationship with the TWTPCs in creating a leadership team to execute TWTP and foster community amongst the MPCs and MPC Friends.
  • Assist the Assistant Director for First & Second Year Programs in planning, organizing and facilitating training for the MPCs. This includes, but is not limited to, logistical planning such as event planning, scheduling and contacting speakers.

ACADEMIC YEAR -

1. Provide support and mentorship to each MPC

  • Support each individual MPC as much as possible.
  • Be available to check in with MPCs outside of small group time.
  • Responsible for holding ‘open hours’ to encourage MPCs to seek one-on-one support.

2. Support MPC workshops & other MPC activities

  • Responsible for ensuring that MPCs have meet & greets as scheduled and intended.
  • Hold MPCs accountable to fulfill their attendance requirements for convocations.
  • Set the weekly schedule for MPC workshops.
  • Help address any problems or issues that may come up during working groups and discuss those steps with the Assistant Director for First & Second Year Programs.
  • Help MPCs with developing workshop topics, content or publicity.
  • Ensure that workshops are implemented and documentation is submitted to the TWC staff in a timely fashion.

3. Facilitate bimonthly ‘MPC Small Group’ meetings

  • Set the agenda, dates, times and locations for these meetings.
  • Inform the Assistant Director for First & Second Year Programs of any areas of concern pertaining to individual MPCs, unit-based situations or working group situations.

4. Participate in regular meetings with TWC staff

  • Participate in weekly meetings with the TWC staff.
  • Inform TWC staff of any issues that come up with MPCs.

5. Plan & coordinate training throughout the year

  • MPCCs are responsible for identifying and coordinating any training activities for MPCs throughout the year.

6. Work with TWTPCs to coordinate and facilitate interaction with MPC Friends

  • MPCCs are responsible for working with the TWTPCs to facilitate formal interaction between MPCs and MPC Friends.
  • MPCCs and TWTPCs are expected to host community building activities for the MPCs and MPC Friends.

7. Uphold the reputation and respect of the MPC program within the greater Brown community

  • MPCCs will communicate with administrators, faculty, students and staff on behalf of the MPC program.
  • Coordinators will respond to any MPC-related correspondence (email, etc.) in a timely and appropriate manner.

Coordinators are expected to uphold:

  • the Tenets of Community Behavior,
  • the Ethical Code for Peer Counselors, and
  • the Standards of Student Conduct.

Coordinators may not obtain or consume alcohol and/or drugs with any Counselors.

Coordinators may not have romantic/sexual relationships with any Minority Peer Counselors.

Violation of the aforementioned will result in termination of employment.
