Rajmohan Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, is a leading public intellectual and humanitarian. He is a prolific author, and has worked actively for India-Pakistan and Hindu-Muslim reconciliation. Who Cares? The Meaning of a JUST University (11/17)

What does "justice" mean for a university? Does a focus on social problems or social justice enhance or constrain the institution? What is the place of "moral values" in "objective scholarship"? Join scholar and writer Stanley Katz for an enlightening conversation about the purposes of liberal arts institutions.

Professor Katz's talk will be followed by a reception featuring Brown faculty integrating their scholarship with public concerns as part of the Engaged Scholarship Initiative of the Swearer Center for Public Service. Refreshments will be served.
Stanley Katz is Professor, Woodrow Wilson School, Princeton University; and President Emeritus, American Council of Learned Societies. He is a scholar of American legal and constitutional history, civil society, international human rights, and philanthropy and non-profit institutions. He is the Editor of the Oliver Wendell Holmes Devise History of the Supreme Court of the United States and of the Oxford International Encyclopedia of Legal History. Among other posts, Katz is a member of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Minority Global Health Disparities Research Training Program (11/23)

The Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing MHIRT offers a biomedical or biobehavioral summer research experience abroad for a Brown undergraduate who demonstrates a dedication and interest in addressing health disparities in the U.S. and abroad. Research projects are located in Australia, South Africa, Sweden, South Korea, China and the Virgin Islands. MHIRT is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Center on Minority Health and Health Disparities, and the Fogarty International Center. The Leadership Alliance at Brown, a program partner, will select one undergraduate to participate in the 2010 program.

National Science Foundation East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes (12/8)

The National Science Foundation (NSF) East Asia and Pacific Summer Institutes for U.S. Graduate Students (EAPSI) is a flagship international fellowship program for developing the next generation of globally-engaged U.S. scientists and engineers knowledgeable about the Asian and Pacific regions. The Summer Institutes are hosted by foreign counterparts committed to increasing opportunities for young U.S. researchers to work in research facilities and with host mentors abroad. Fellows are supported to participate in eight-week research experiences at host laboratories in Australia, China, Japan (10 weeks), Korea, New Zealand, Singapore and Taiwan from June to August. The program provides a $5,000 summer stipend, round-trip airfare to the host location, living expenses abroad, and an introduction to the society, culture, language, and research environment of the host location.
The application is now open and will close December 8, 2009.

American Educational Research Association (AERA) Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop (12/15)

The American Educational Research Association invites fellowship applications for the Undergraduate Student Education Research Training Workshop to be held at the 2010 Annual Meeting in Denver. This workshop is designed to build the talent pool of undergraduate students who plan to pursue doctorate degrees in education research or in disciplines and fields that examine education issues. Applicants are sought who have potential and interest in pursuing careers as education researchers, faculty members, or other professionals who contribute to the research field.
The workshop, led by junior and senior scholars, will give fellows an overview of how education research is designed across fields, how quantitative and qualitative research methods are used in studies, and how research is applied to education policy and practice. Senior researchers and faculty from both academic institutions and applied research organizations (i.e., ACT, the American Institutes for Research, Educational Testing Service, the College Board, and the Urban Institute) will introduce education research as a field and share their area of expertise and knowledge with the fellows. Workshop activities will also focus on exploring graduate education, applying to graduate school, and beginning a career in education research.

The Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) invites applications for a ten-week paid summer research internship for undergraduate students (rising juniors or seniors). The program will be held from May 23-July 29, 2010 at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The MURAP program seeks to prepare students from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds, or those with a proven commitment to diversity, for graduate study and academic careers in fields in the humanities, social sciences and fine arts. The program provides students with a rigorous research experience under the guidance of UNC faculty mentor. Each student participant will receive:

Wake Forest University MBA Fellowship Program
The Wake University Babcock Graduate School of Management is looking for diverse students for the Master of Art in Management (MA) degree. The MA degree is designed specifically for liberal arts majors that want to pursue a career in business. The program requires 10 months of intense study of the basic functional areas of business. We will offer 10 - 12 Corporate Fellowships next year for diverse students pursuing the MA degree.
