Mentoring Program

The mentoring program helps first and second year students navigate through the maze of choices that being a science concentrator can bring. First-years and sophomores are paired with upper class mentors who can give their mentees a unique student perspective. Mentors are a resource within an entire network of resources.

What is a WiSE Mentor?

WiSE mentors offers a students' perspective of Brown. As a student you can teach your mentees about your past experiences at Brown, both good and bad. You can help them deal with their choices and challenges by recalling your own time at Brown.

WiSE mentors are a resource within a network of resources. You can tell your mentees about opportunities that they may not have thought of or discovered at Brown. This may include opportunities, how to approach/work with professors, and how to take advantage of resources Brown provides, such as advisors, Deans, TAs, and even the WiSE web page.

WISE mentors know how to take initiative.

Each mentor is responsible for contacting their mentee to let them know about WiSE events that you are attending and that might be of interest to them. Mentors make themselves accessible to their mentees. They let their mentees know when they are available to talk and set up casual meetings with their mentees outside of WiSE events.

WiSE mentors know how to listen.

Mentors are good at listening to their mentees talk things out to both themselves and the other mentees in the group.

Interested in being a mentor?

WiSE is always looking for rising sophomore, junior and senior Brown women with knowledge of math, science and engineering at Brown to be mentors for first and second year students. The application period for the Mentoring Program for 2011-2012 will begin in early Spring 2011. Check back often for application updates.

Upper-class mentors can help you navigate through the maze of choosing courses, finding the right concentration, getting help, declaring your concentration and much much more. WiSE holds many events throughout the academic year that help advise and encourage all Brown undergraduates in the sciences.
