Employment

The Writing Center hires Graduate Writing Associates to work regular two or three-hour shifts during the academic year. We accept applications throughout the year, and usually we hire at the beginning of each semester.

Writing Associates hold one-on-one conferences on writing with Brown undergraduates, graduate students, visiting scholars, faculty and staff. Many visitors have specialized concerns, such as English as a Foreign Language, application essays, grant proposals, or scientific writing. Click here for a more detailed description of this position.

Applicants should have substantial experience teaching writing, either one-on-one or in a class. Courses in the theory of teaching composition, such as English 195 or 295 at Brown, would be beneficial, as would specific training in ESL/EFL, learning disabilities, technical writing, or a foreign language. All new staff will complete a short training program in which they will be asked to observe senior staff and be observed while conducting a session.

Graduate students from all departments in the sciences and the humanities are encouraged to apply. See a description of our current staff if you would like to see the various disciplines represented on our staff.

To be considered for employment, applicants must send an application form, writing sample, and resume to the Writing Center Coordinator. You can obtain an application form from this website or from the Writing Center (Room 206, Rockefeller Library).

Direct your application to the Writing Center Coordinator, at Box 1956. For more information call x3-3524 or email Doug Brown.
