A Guide to the Writing Fellows Program Application Process

Step 1:  Application Part A
Part A of the application is posted on our website: http://www.brown.edu/Student_Services/Writing_Fellows/application/
It includes several questions and a cover letter. Part A must be handed in at the
Writing Center, in J. Walter Wilson 213, by 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday, April 18.

Step 2: Interview
When you hand in Part A, you will sign up for an interview, which will take place between Wednesday, April 25 and Tuesday, May 1. You will have two interviewers and the interview will be 30 minutes long.  In the first part of the interview, we will ask you questions and discuss your experiences writing and teaching for 10-15 minutes. You will then have up to 10 minutes to teach us something. (If you would prefer to teach first, just let your interviewers know!)

What do we mean by ‘teach us something’? Well, we want to get a sense of your ability to guide someone else through learning something new, and you can show us this ability in any way you want. People have taught us how to make sandwiches, how to do a dance, how to play a game—the list goes on. The bottom line is, you should think about something that you will be able to teach clearly and effectively within 10 minutes, focusing on the process involved.

The third and final part of the interview will be a few minutes for you to ask us any questions you may have about the program.

Step 3:  Application Part B
You will submit Part B of the application by 4:00 PM on Friday, May 18.

Part B is posted on the website. We ask you to submit two pieces of your academic work that demonstrate quality and organization; we encourage you to submit papers from different disciplines if possible. When combined, the two papers together should total 8–25 double-spaced pages.

Along with each paper, we ask you to write one paragraph in which you describe the assignment and discuss the paper’s strengths and weaknesses. Even though we only ask for one-paragraph descriptions, this is an important part of the application. We also ask that all papers are clean copies with no comments from professors.

We do have foreign language Fellows, and if you are interested in Fellowing a foreign language class, we ask you to submit an additional paper written in that language.

Step 4: Decisions
After all the applications are turned in, Doug Brown and a group of Fellows will meet to read and discuss the applications, and you will hear the decision during the summer.
