Who's Who and What's What in the Brown ACLU
(or, What the Hell Are They Talking About?)
ACLU members here at Brown have a tendency to throw crazy acronyms
and titilating surnames, among many, many other things, at each other during
our weekly meetings. To a neonate, such jargon is confusing at best. Thus,
this brief list, intended to debrief you with brief explanations about these
abbreviations and to illuminate, at least in part, their relevance to civil
liberty issues on campus:
ACLU-- Awesome Club Likes U (But seriously folks...)
CASA-- Coalition Against Sexual Assault. Formed in
response to several publicized instances of sexual assault
ISO--International Socialist Organization, those wacky folks that share our office space.
OSL-- Office of Student Life. Concerned with all matters of student
life.
ResLife-- Office of Residential Life. An unimpressive abbreviation,
concerned with all matters of housing
SAPE-- Sexual Assault Peer Educators. Oft in cahoots with CASA
UCS-- Undergraduate Council of Students. Student government on the
college level
UDC-- University Disciplinary Council. Big Brother, a council of
students and administrators who mete out discipline when
deemed necessary
Dean Thomas Bechtel-- very involved in the rights (or lack thereof) of
mentally ill students
Blumstein, Sheila-- the head of last year's committee on examining
sexual misconduct and Brown's related policies; a former UDC chair
Foley, Stephen-- Chair of UDC, and Professor of English who got
stuck in his car two Wednesdays ago
Dean Forsberg-- a Dean of Residential Life, very involved with
search and seizure policy
Joukowsky, Artemis--Chancellor of the university who makes huge financial
contributions; married to Martha
Joukowsky, Martha-- Professor and representative of a special
student involved in a sexual misconduct case
with the UDC
Pomerantz, Jim-- as Provost, the "chief academic officer" overseeing
all academics at Brown. He's a big shot.
Dean Robin Rose-- Dean of Student Life, and so much more
Dean Kenneth Sacks--Dean of the College, yet another "Big Shot"
Dean Toby Simon--Former Associate Dean of Student Life, she has now left Brown. She created the UDC
Although not at all a complete listing, this should serve to inform
you about many of the notable figures and organizations on campus.
