Like any normal human being,
you have an innate desire to hole yourself up in a funky lab with dangerous
chemicals, work long hours, and generally kiss your social life goodbye.
All kidding aside, research can be cool. I have done it and had some good
and not so good experiences, but it is definitely something to consider.
But I should stress that you should not feel compelled to do research just because you are a pre-med. Ripley himself will tell you pre-meds overemphasize
its importance. So do it if you want to do research.
But how? Let me count the ways...
- Bio Office - the building on the corner of Thayer
and
Waterman with the curved hedge out in front. There's a
folder in there listing people who are looking for
volunteers.
The beauty of the 'net. This information (and some more) is online at:
http://bms.brown.edu/bug/pages/research.html
- Talk to Dean Thompson (head of undergrad bio dept.)
about some ways to get involved (be warned, she's super busy)
- Email prof's based on their research websites
- UTRA - Undergraduate Teaching Research Assistanship.

- Talk to one your professors of one of your classes
- AMSA (duh!) We'll be throwing out all kinds of research/internship/assistanship/be
my slave opportunities for you all.
- Sign up for jobmail - jobmail is something most frosh don't know
about. Heck, most students don't know about it period. It's a website
that sends out emails to you when a student job opens up in an area
that you indicated an interest in. There's plenty of bio opportunities
there
