Brown students work with local high schools to encourage and promote careers in medicine. In addition volunteers partner with high schoolers to mentor them in what classes to take and which colleges to consider with an aim toward their pursuit of a future in a health-related field.
Dash for Diabetes is an annual road race (run or walk) founded in 2008 to benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The course is one mile, downhill, around Brown's campus, and in addition to the race, the event includes food, music, awards, and raffle prizes. Since its inception, Dash for Diabetes has raised over $4000 for diabetes research and the JDRF. Premed AMSA volunteers plan and organize Dash for Diabetes over a span of several months, and then on the day of race, volunteers direct and oversee the event.
