2006 - 2007 Minutes

4/4/07 Meeting
1.) GB - Our next GB is scheduled for next week, on Wednesday, April 11th, 2007 at 8 pm.  Wendy and Regina have kindly volunteering to pick up desserts from East Side Marketplace, Yay!  We'll be tableslipping from Monday to Wednesday.

2.) Elections!  Congratulations to everyone on their new positions! Yay!

Communications: Julia
Community Service Chair: Sabrina
Fundraising Chair: Eric
GB Planner: Min Suk

3.) Budget - There was the meeting today at 3 o'clock at Starbucks.  Other possible speakers were brought up, and currently it looks like B.D. Wong is someone we are interested in bringing to campus.  If we decide to try to bring him, we could probably get support from QA, CSA, etc.

4.) TWC 30th Anniversary is on April 27th, 2007.  We've decided to volunteer at the Block Party (4-6 pm)  on Brown street, where we will probably help serve ethnic food from local vendors.

3/21/07 Meeting
1.)  We sold 15 tickets at night market to make a total of $14.50.  Yay for jello and games!

2.)  For the Jim Kim lecture, we have currently raised about $600 ($250 from the Dean of the College, $250 from the Office of Institutional Diversity, and $100 from Hanuri).  Professor Smith has said that he can introduce Jim Kim if the lecture occurs after 7:30 pm. For groups that express interest in helping but don't have any money, we'll ask them to help with tableslipping and putting up posters.  Also, it would be great if the other groups could help print tableslips and posters, since we have run out of funds for that.  Please follow up on your respective departments when you come back from break.

3.) Our next general body meeting is set for April 9th at 7 pm.  We have yet to book a room, but hopefully we can book the TWC or Arnold Lounge.  We will table slip from Friday to that Monday.  We'll have cookies and drinks at the GB.  Wendy and Regina have kindly offered to pick these up from East Side Marketplace.

4.)  Budget--The Lecture with Jhumpa Lahiri will cost around $15,000, plus first class accomdations and airfare!  We'll put her in the budget for now, and ask other groups for help (maybe they could put her in their budgets for next year too?)  Please try to think of some interesting people that you would like to bring as Spring lecturers/speakers/etc.

5.)  Katharine will look in the idea of AASA tee-shirts.

6.)  Please sign up for Relay for Life!  This will be a really fun AASA bonding event!

7.) Elections will take place the Wednesday after Spring break, (April 4th).  Please email Yang and Jane if that time is not good for you, and we'll try to reschedule.  We really want EVERYONE to be present at elections.  Email Jane and Yang with your top choices for positions.  The roll-over should begin mid-April, with a transition period.

3/14/07 Meeting

1.) Jim Kim - Hanuri wants to donate money.  Yay!  Please try to send out your letters by the end of this week!  Also, it seems that there might be great interest in this lecture (from development studies students, community health, med students, etc), so we are trying see if we can book Saloman 101.  We currently have Saloman 001 booked.

2.) Nightmarket - the jellys sink.  Sadly.  However, we can still play a very challenging chopstick game with them.  The water and chopsticks make the jellys reallllly slippery and hard to grasp.  The plan is to have people try to pick up the jellys and then give them as many jellys as they pick up for the prize.  Please sign up for a shift if you haven't already!  Yay for Terrence and Eric!   They were be representing AASA at some sort of game involving food...

3.) April GB - We are probably going to do some sort of fireside chat with professor thing.  Terrence will email Professor Kim, and hopefully we can get him to come to lead a discussionon Asian masculinity.

4.)  Keep in mind that elections will be held after Spring break.  Yang and Jane are currently trying to formalize process.  Also, the budget for next year is due this Friday.

5.)  Relay for Life - Please sign up!  We need at least 8 people to have a team!

10/30/06 Meeting
1. EACS is set for Friday, Novermber 10th from 7 to 9 pm in Andrew's Dining Hall.  Tickets are $8 at the PO, $10 at the door, and $5 for performers.

2.  Asian Street Bazaar is being held this Saturday.  We decided not to do food, but to have the Chopstick game.  Prizes and candy will be purchases by Hee Kyung.  We will probably have 1 thirty second game per ticket.  I will send out another email to sign up for times to work that night.

3.  The Film screening is set for Friday November 17th.  Hopefully AASA can help tableslip.

4.  Chang Rae Lee is coming!  Yay!  He will be giving a talk on November 13th, and we have enough money left over to take him out to dinner that day.  Jane is checking out where we go to Phonatic or Kabob n' Curry.  Please reply to her email by Friday responding to if you can be at the dinner.  For publicity, we should have 5 days of tableslipping.

10/2/2006 Meeting
1.  We've raise about $2,100 for Chang Rae Lee, yay!  And the breakdown goes like this:  $1,00 from Institutional diversity, $500 from the wonderful AASA, $100 each from the Departments of American Civilization, English, Comparative Literature, Ethnic Studies, and Urban Studies, and $100 from the Wayland Collegium .  We have yet to hear from the Dean of the Collge, the Office of Student Life, and the Lecture Board.  Hye Kyung and Jane will present on October 11th to Lecture Board (Good Luck!)

2.  Minsuk has neard from Sam Yoon's secretary that he is interested in coming to Brown, but no more details after that.  Even with Wendy's valient efforts, Kenji Yoshino is still MIA.  Hopefully, we will hear good news from him soon.

3.  Mentorship Dinner will be held on this Thursday, October 5th at 6 pm in the Ratty.  Be there.

4.  The next GB is set for October 23rd, from 8:30 to 9:30 pm.  We still have to talk with Janine for more info on this.

5.  No official meeting next week (I'll miss you all!)

6.  Street bazaar is tentatively set for November 4th, but we still haven't ironed out any definate plans for food or game.

7.  VISIONS--if you want to submit written pieces, please do so by October 10th, and art pieces by October 16th.

8.  BASIC:  This year, it'll be held on Saturday October 21st at Wellesley College in Massachusetts (my lovely home state).  AASA can reimburse about 8 people for full fare, and if more people want to go, AASA can reimburse for a portion of the registration fee.  There is also money for travel expenses, so if we get enough interest, maybe we could get a bus or something?  http://bostonbasic.org/  It's $10 until October 8th at 12 am.

9.  We need to work on the mission statement.  Parts of it don't seem so relevant, and could be revised.

9/25/2006 Meeting
1.  We have raised $700 for Chang Rae Lee's honorarium.  Yay!  Still, if this doesn't work out, our back-up speakers will be:  Sam Yoon and/or Kenji Yoshino
Sam Yoon is the first Asian American to serve on the Boston City Council, and works to improve affordable housing Boston's Chinatown.  Minsuk will be contacting him.

Kenji Yoshino is a Japanese American gay law professor and lawyer.  He is also the author of Covering.  Wendy will be contacting him.

2.  We may co-sponsor a film festival for AAHM.  We voted for 1 film, and the e-board had the most interest in the "Real Asian-Americans" politically themed short program.  There may be another film or short program included, depending on how much money can be amassed.

3.  Right to Vote:  Article 2 currently prevents convicted felons from voting, even if they are out on parole, which disproportionately affects minority men.  Article 2 is coming up for a referedum on November 7th, and AASA has decided to provide endorsement.  Janine will send an email to the GB addressing the issue of canvassing.

4.  The next GB is to focue on the history of hate crimes, etc.  Currently, we are hoping for the first part to be an info session, and the second part will be a workshop.  Janine will contact Jane Wong for more information.  The next GB is currently scheduled for Monday, October 23rd from 8 to 9

5.  Mentoring dinner is set for next week, on Thursday October 5th, at 6 pm.  Locational logistics have yet to be finalized.

9/18/2006 Meeting
Keynote speaker for AAHM
     - Currently considering bringing Korean American novelist Chang Rae Lee ($7,500 honorarium)
     - Possible targets for fundraising are KASA, lecture board, comp lit dept, ethnic studies dept, urban studies dept, poli sci dept, american civ dept, office of student life, office of institutional diversity, and the Wayland Collegium of liberal learning
     - Other possibilites for the keynote speaker are Sam Yoon, Harold Koh, Glen who helps illegal immigrants in Chinatown (Terrance is unsure of his last name), and the author of Covering, a book on new discrimination politics.
     - Any other suggestions?

PAC leadership retreat
     - Sept 30th, 9 am to 8 pm.  Yang, Jess, and Janine will be attending.  A 4th person might be allowed to go, depending on how many people other groups send to the retreat.

Political Activism
     - Hope to have a more political GB next time.
     - Possible issues to discuss:  1) police brutality, racial profiling, historical elements of this, hate crimes and the hate crime policy at Brown,    2) the right to vote,    3) immigration [educating immigrants on how to find/keep jobs, housing, etc.]

BASIC
     - Boston Asian Students Intercollegiate Conference 2006 will be held on October 21st at Wellesley
     - Theme is "Caution: Asian Pacific Americans in Progress"
     - There will be talks, workshops, etc.
     - We can cover the registration fees for 8 people fully, or more people partially.  The fee is $14 as of now until October 15th.

Community Service
     -  SDC (Socioeconomic Development Center for Southeast Asians) deals with many problems, including young people getting assimilated by pop culture and resorting to gang violence.  Deportation is also a major issue, breaking up families in the process.
     - Possible idea is to bring the kids to Brown campus for mentoring (kids can see the Brown campus, see the possibilities of their own future, also more convienent for Brown students, hopefully leading to more Brown students being willing to mentor)

Mentorship
     - Division into 4 groups: Pan-Asian outreach, Community Service, Political Activism, and Social Events.
     - Offers another level of committment for AASA members (less than e-board, but more than average member)
     - Paroan sent out more info in an email yesterday
