If you will be travelling from afar to our sing-in, we've compiled some potentially useful unformation for you. More information published by the university can be found here.
Note: sometimes it is convenient to coordinate travel with others using carpools, shared taxis, rental cars, hotel rooms, etc. This can be a way to save money, if you're into that sort of thing.
Transportation
The Sing-In will be held on the Brown University Campus in East Side Providence, RI. We will be in the Steinert building at the intersection of Hope and Power.
Providence is accessible in a number of ways:
By Car
Driving to Providence is not difficult. It is located rather directly off interstate 95. Mapquest, Yahoo! maps, or Google maps should be able to help you. Feel free to contact Nick if you would like specific instructions.
Approximate driving times:
- From Boston: 1 hour
- From New York City: 4 hours
- From Philadelphia: 5.5 hours
By Train
The Providence train station is located at 100 Gaspee St in downtown Providence. Amtrak does have regular trains through Providence. If you are coming from the Boston area, the MBTA commuter rail also goes to the Providence train station.
The train station is downtown, about 1.5 miles from the sing-in location. This could be either a short cab ride or a long walk. Be warned: if you walk, you will have to walk up a rather steep hill.
By Bus
Bonanza Bus connects Providence to various locations throughout Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Rhode Island. Bonanza has two stops in Providence: "Kennedy Plaza" and "Bonanza Bus Terminal". Kennedy Plaza is downtown, not far from the train station -- it's a long (uphill) walk or a short cab ride to the sing-in location.
Bonanza's rates are quite good -- it tends to be much cheaper than Amtrack. Sam Silvers reports that one can ride Bonanza from New York City to Providence for $67, round trip.
Greyhound also serves Providence, also via Kennedy Plaza.
By Plane
T. F. Green airport (PVD) is located on I-95, about a 15 minute drive from the Brown campus. Most major air carriers serve T.F. Green, including Southwest. I believe that a cab from T.F. Green to Brown costs something in the neighborhood of $30. There is also a $11 airport shuttle; information is available here. Car rentals are also available.
It is also possible to fly into Boston's Logan airport, but you will then need to arrange transportation from Boston to Providence.
Lodging
The sing-in will take place most of the day Saturday. We would be happy to put students up in dorm rooms. Otherwise, if you plan to stay in the area Friday night, Saturday night, or both, you should arrange to book a hotel room. Unfortunately, the number of hotels that are very close to the sing-in location is limited. Here is a list of nearby hotels courtesy of Hotels.com.
Here is a list published by the University of alternative possibilities. Note that not all of them are local to Providence. If you will be bringing or renting a car, Cranston, Warwick, Pawtucket, Smithfield, and Lincoln are nearby Rhode Island towns that are easily accessible. Seekonk, MA and Attleboro, MA are also quite close. (All of the cities I just mentioned can be reached in 10-20 minute driving.)
