Patrick Curran Wins the Rita Schaffer Award

Rita Schaffer Undergraduate Award is conferred each year to one undergraduate student from each of the ABET-accredited biomedical engineering programs. This award was established to honor the memory of former BMES Executive Director Rita Schaffer, who passed away in 1998 and left her estate to BMES.

The Rita Schaffer Undergraduate Award recipients are selected based on leadership in the university community, outreach to the community, teaching service, exceptional initiative in research and academic achievement.

Pat Curran received a Bachelor of Science degree from Brown in May 2006 in Biomedical Engineering. He is currently participating in the 5th year master's program and will receive his Master of Science degree in Biomedical Engineering in May 2007. He has spent 3 years in Orthopaedics Research in the Brown Bioengineering Lab. His master's thesis is focused on designing and validating a motion capturing suit to model 3-dimensional human kinematics out of a laboratory setting. As an undergraduate, he received All-Ivy and All-America honors as a starting defensive tackle on the 2005 Ivy League Championship football team. He has volunteered as a tutor and is currently a teaching assistant in the Department of Engineering.
