Contra and Folk Dance Society

Description: Contra dance is a social form of dancing done in long with a partner in long lines of couples. We always dance to a live band (generally including fiddle and guitar) and have a caller who teaches the dances. It is easy to learn and high-energy. The contra dance at Brown is well-attended by students and community members across southern New England.

Time Commitment: Since contra dancing is purely social and not performance-based, the only time commitment is to show up to the dances when you like.

How To Get Involved: We hold dances on the first and third Fridays of every month while Brown is in session. You can generally find us in Sayles Hall (though sometimes Leung Gallery—check our schedule) on these nights from 8:00pm-11:30pm.

Contacts: Julia Nickles or contradance@brown.edu.
