| facilities Brown has two spaces specifically designed for dance, Ashamu Dance Studio and the two dance spaces in T.F Green Hall, rooms 205 and 114, but in practice there are many more students wanting to perform, rehearse and hold classes than these spaces can hold, so there are also a number of other spaces not designed for dance that get used. Ashamu space is alotted by the TSDA department, and then what's left after the faculty have taken time is assigned by Body&Sole. T.F. Green and all other spaces must be reserved online with the University Scheduling Office. For a full synopsis of Brown spaces and how to reserve them, see: http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Event_Planning/space/oncampus.html
And you can reserve those that are managed by the University Scheduling Office online at: http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Scheduling_Office/
Events with over 100 people expected, or where money will be charged for admission, must be done through Event Registration: http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Event_Planning/review/registration.html
More resources for event planning (like for performances) can be found at: http://www.brown.edu/Administration/Event_Planning/
Below are listed the spaces most often used for dance, for rehearsal or practice, student-run classes or workshops, and performances. And following that a listing of specifications for Ashamu, T.F. Green and available spaces.
The Scheduling Office allows groups and individuals to reserve space for regular practice hours in advance, but anything beyond that must be reserved 5 days in advance. Generally groups tend to rehearse in the evening because it's too hard to find a time during the day when all members don't have class, so individuals with time during the day may have an advantage getting space before 6pm, and out of courtesy for other dancers, probably should try to use that time rather than go for the busy evening hours. And more generally, since the scarcity of space for dancers has often been a point of contention, everyone should try to be considerate in their planning and remember that every dancer or dance group, regardless of experience, years in operation or UFB status, is entitled to the space the University provides, and it's up to us to share it.
COMMONLY USED SPACES
For Rehearsal: T.F. Green 114 and 205, Ashamu studio, Sayles Hall, Leung Gallery, Arnold Lounge, Harkness Lounge, Petterutti Lounge. Lounges of Wriston buildings can be used with permission of host (e.g. fraternity, sorority or Art House, etc.).
For Holding Classes: Leung Gallery, Sayles Hall, T.F. Green 205 and occassionally Ashamu.
For Performance: Salomon 101 and 001, Sayles Hall, T.F. Green 205, Alumnae Hall, Andrews Dining Hall, List 110 and 120, and very rarely, and only with faculty permission, Ashamu dance studio. (Only individuals and organizations who have contributed time to running the Spring Festival of Dance and who have the permission of the Department can perform in Ashamu, which means basically it's not for student shows).
SPECIFICATIONS AND DETAILS
note: "sprung floors" means that that the floors have been built on layers of interlocked planks, rather than on top of cement or some other rigid building material. This gives the floor a springy quality that is healthier for people who intend to jump up and down and throw their weight around on top of it (i.e. dancers). Dancing on top of floors built on concrete is harder on joints and makes falls hit that much harder, so caution should be used when dancing in the non-sprung floor spaces, which is everywhere except T.F. Green and Ashamu.
Ashamu:
approximately 30x80 feet. Equipped with mirrors, sprung floors and well set up for performance, with seats, lights, sound system, marley and curtains. Performances here are generally depart-run or department-sponsored, out of concern for the equipment, and the space generally gets used for TSDA classes, rehearsal of faculty-led companies, but some space is left over for student rehearsal, choreography or practice time, and this is divided up by Body&Sole. Faculty discretionary time is often not used, and when it isn't, Body&Sole will try to get students in, but it should be understood that if faculty need the space at the last minute, they have priority and will take it back.
T.F. Green 205:
34x56 feet, capacity is 203 people standing. Equipped with mirrors and sprung floors, but for performances, lights and sound and seats need to be brought in. One would probably need to get in touch with Media Services.
T.F. Green 114: 16x25 feet, equipped with mirrors and sprung floors. Its small size is more ideal for a small number of dancers, but often gets used for large company rehearsals, also not ideal for performances, but could be used for small, informal ones easily.
Saloman 101: Has 594 seats, this is its capacity (no sitting in aisles). Floor of stage is not sprung, and of considerably different (not listed) dimensions from Ashamu and T.F. Green, it's sort of a narrow strip. Lights can be mounted from the balcony or from the back rows if necessary.
Saloman 001: 224 seats, floor is not sprung, and space even smaller than above. Lights would have to be mounted from the back row, so better suited for smaller performances.
Specifications for other spaces are currently unavailable.
