Constitution

I. STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The Brotherhood exists as a safe space for Black men to discuss and express the views, which we see as socially and politically significant. The Brotherhood seeks to support and strengthen the bond between its members by sharing our common and diverse experiences as Black men. We, as Black men, find that this communal space is severely inhibited within the walls of Brown University and seek to make the voice of Black men heard more often on all levels of the university. Thus, we will help foster a sense of friendship and unity among the Black men to ensure that this space is a safe haven for its members to express their political, social, academic, spiritual views and experiences at Brown.

II. MEMBERSHIP
Membership to the Brotherhood is open to all full-time undergraduates of the Brown community and does not discriminate on the basis of sex, race, color, religion, handicap, status as a veteran, sexual orientation, national or ethnic origin. Majority membership consists of full-time undergraduate Brown students.

III. LEADERSHIP
The Brotherhood member ship and leadership shall be broken down into two types, general members and the governing board. The governing board shall be composed of four formal leaders, two Chairs and two Associate Chairs. The rest of the governing board is composed of members who work more actively on the mission of The Brotherhood. The governing board shall organize projects, events, meetings and discussions.

IV. FINANCES
(When we are funded) All expenses of the Brotherhood shall be paid through the Office of Student Activities, and all funds collected by the group from any source shall be deposited with the Office of Student Activities. The Brotherhood agrees to follow all regulations regarding all financial transactions as set forth by the Office of Student Activities.

V. AMENDMENT PROCEDURE
An amendment shall be brought before the group by majority vote. The organizers shall notify all current members of the group that an amendment to the group’s constitution is to be considered. The amendment will then be considered at the meeting following its announcement to the group. To be accepted, an amendment must gain support from two thirds of the group membership. Once an amendment has been accepted by the Brotherhood, it shall be given to the UCS Vise President at least two (2) full days before the next regularly scheduled full council meeting. A representative from the group shall attend this meeting to present the amendment for UCS approval. Upon receipt of a simple majority from UCS, the amendment shall be considered a formal part of the Brotherhood’s constitution.
