The Brown Hawai`i Club has been a part of the University community for fourteen years! Besides giving kama`aina an excuse to cruise, our meetings, potlucks, and club activities have consistently attracted the attention of Hawai`i enthusiasts who want to learn more about local culture. Ho, brah, talk about spreading da aloha! When our first website was created, the Hawai`i Club's founder, Bennett Loui, sent us a congratulatory email and told us about our history in Brown's community. Here's an excerpt from Loui's letter:
Since 1989, the Brown Hawai`i Club has managed to accomplish our founder's goals. Our organization currently enjoys a Category III status, which is outlined by the Undergraduate Council of Students (UCS). All new clubs begin at Category I; the main differences between category levels are the financial advantages and services afforded groups with sufficient membership and longevity. Our membership size and history of club activities have demonstrated to UCS that the Brown Hawai`i Club has had an impact on the rest of the university community and is worthy of receiving privileges that include access to university facilities and services, advertising rights, and funding. All funds are allocated from the Student Activity Fee by the Undergraduate Finance Board (UFB) and are used to accomplish the integral goals of the club.
Aloha!
Let me introduce myself, since it's been a long time since anyone's seen me in the Providence area. Back in 1989, I arrived as a first year at Brown with seven other Punahou kids, excited to meet new people and get involved in campus life. Quickly it became apparent that although some of the Hawaii folks were aware of each other, they rarely got together fo' talk story or grinds. Since I had cousins with a house in RI, I decided to have everyone over for a barbecue, and we all had a great time. Potlucks on campus followed, and we began to talk about getting funding and having a lu'au...
Good luck with [this year's] lu'au, and make sure the hula boys "make A" and party hard afterwards!
Bennett Loui
Mahalo for taking the time to visit our website! A hui hou....
