event held by the Brown University Chinese Students &
Scholars Association (Brown CSSA) to celebrate the
Chinese New Year. Many people around the world consider
Chinese New Year, also known as the Lunar New Year or
the Spring Festival, to be the most significant holiday
of the year. Traditionally, members of the family near
and far try their best to get together and have a
reunion on Chinese New Year's Eve, just as Americans do
for Thanksgiving or Christmas. It is unfortunate that
most of the students and scholars at Brown who celebrate
this holiday cannot return to their families during the
Chinese New Year. Consequently, Brown CSSA has
the responsibility and honor of holding our
own celebration instead, to unite all of these people
here at Brown. We believe that this is especially
important to those who are far away from their families
and motherland.
The entire Brown Community as well as Chinese people all
around us in adjacent universities and communities are
encouraged to attend this event. Feel free to bring your
foreign friends too. The performances will feature various forms of
traditional and modern Chinese dance, as well as vocal
and instrument performances, mini-dramas and interactive
games. We will provide English explanations or
translations for the majority of performances to aid
those who do not understand Chinese.
This event not only provides local people with a great
chance to get a taste of the thousands-year-old
traditions and culture of China, but also fosters
communication between people of different ethnicities
and backgrounds. This event has an international stage,
where everyone can collectively contribute and enjoy the
results. We hope that our efforts on the CSSA 2008
Chinese New Year Celebration will enhance the
multicultural atmosphere here at Brown.
We warmly welcome your participation and attendance, and
hope you will spend a memorable night with us!
