With patience and an interest in ancient Greek and Roman art, this course will satisfy both your desire for an introductory course and a requirement for History of Art concentrators. "Foundations of Western Art in Antiquity" is a low-level course that seeks to provide students with a background of ancient artwork as a basis for further study. There are no prerequisites, nor did respondents recommend any previous experience.

Professor Holloway was described as a readily understandable, straightforward teacher. Students said he was friendly and helpful in office hours, but allowed very few opportunities for questions or discussion during class. His lectures lasted precisely fifty minutes, but respondents noted his occasional humor and exhaustive knowledge of the material. Some commented that lectures were more interesting when he spoke freely, rather than reading off his notes.

As Brown courses go, this is one of the easiest. Students claimed to spend only one hour or so a week on it because there was virtually no reading. The principal effort involved was memorizing the slides of the artwork for the three tests. The only other requirement was two papers which most agreed were simple exposition of memorized information.

Because the course demanded so little of students, few felt they got much out of it. Generally, the greatest benefit was an improved understanding of the art form ancient Greece and Rome, but more in the sense of identification than deep comprehension.

It's almost a shame to admit that Brown has courses that are this easy, but here is a classic gut course. The downside to such easy classes, of course, is that they lead to little intellectual growth and are really a waste of tuition money to take if not required.
