"Archaeology of Anatolia" is an introductory level course that asks no more from students than some interest in archaeology (not surprising) and a desire to learn a lot from a very popular teacher. No background is necessary, but those with archaeology experience mentioned their background was helpful in following all the material.

It's no wonder Professor Joukowsky has a reputation among students as an outstanding teacher. Respondents described her as friendly, knowledgable, enthusiastic and energetic. Students particularly enjoyed the way she ran the class: informally, with opportunites for input and humor to keep the atmosphere light. The slides presented in class helped numerous students with the concepts, making learning easy and better directed.

The course did not demand an excessive amount of time and effort from the students, but most noted that it was not a gut course. The reading was dense and somewhat lengthy, but some claimed that it was not necessary to follow the course adequately.With two exams, two papers (2-page and 10-page), a research project, and a take-home final, students spent approximately four hours a week on the class.

Professor Joukowsky made the course worthwhile for many students, and her enthusiasm inspired many to give their best effort. Most agreed they learned a great deal, but admitted that much of the material was of a fascinating if obscure nature.

The cast majority of students recommend taking this course, or at least one course with Professor Joukowsky while the opportunity exists. Her popularity is well-deserved, encouraging many to study in a department very different from their own.
