If the mention of Madonna brings to mind images of Christian figures rather than a pop music icon, you will probably have a greater appreciation for the topics in this course than someone who thinks of the latter. "Late Roman and Early Christian Art and Architecture" focuses on the period leading up to the sixth century A.D. No backgroundknowledge is necessary, but several students mentioned that previous art history courses, especially anything relating to Roman art, might be helpful.
Professor Winkes was praised for his enthusiasm and extensive knowledge of the material. Students also noted that his recognition of differing levels of understanding helped keep the class together and prevented anyone from falling behind. Those who did have trouble felt comfortable approaching him outside class for clarification and assistance. The only limitation on the professorslecturing style was his German accent, which, some admitted, made it difficult to follow him occasionally.
The course required a substantial time commitment to complete all the reading and preparation for the exams, with most respondents devoting six hours each week outside of class. There were three one-hour exams including the final, and a 10-12 page term paper. Most students enjoyed the material a great deal, so the effort demanded was not a complaint.
Most of the students finsihed the course with the feeling that they had learned a great deal, although some were more excited about this than others. Those who had a great interest in the subtle distinctions that developed over the periods examined felt the professor did an excellent job preparing them for future study in the area. A minority became discouraged over the course of the semester by the apparent lack of significant changes in the pieces the class looked at.
Essentially, this is a fairly narrowly focused course on the art created over 1,500 years ago that hard core art history concentrators are likely to enjoy. Professor Winkes is a knowledgable and effective instructor, but neither he nor the material will radically alter your attitude toward the topic.
