Biology 189, "Human Histology", is a high-level course which is open only to medical students, grad students, and advanced PLME undergraduates. The goal of this course is to analyze the relationships between the structure and functions of human tissues, with emphasis on development, growth, and physiology.
The course was taught by Dean Thompson, whom class members considered to be an excellent instructor. Students reported that she was enthusiastic, humorous, and very approachable. She was able to present the material in a way that made it both interesting and understandable.
Most respondents stated that they spent between 5 and 10 hours per week on the reading for this course. There was a large amount of information which had to be learned for the exams, of which there were two during the semester in addition to a final exam. There were also weekly labs, which consisted mainly of viewing microscope slides, which had to be memorized for exams.
The few PLME students who took this course felt that it was a worthwhile experience. Some of the students noted that it was difficult to be an undergraduate in a medical school class. However, the usefulness of the material that was presented in the class and the quality of the instructor made this class a good choice for all of the PLME's who took it.
