Cognitive Science 1 provides a wide, multidisciplinary introduction to three fields in the department: vision, cognition and linguistics. Aside from general interest, there are no prerequisites for the class. Taught by three different professors in sequence, the course gives students a taste of three different tracks in the Cognitive Science department.
Professors Jacobson, Sloman and Reichel taught sequentially in this class. The course was split into three different parts, each one taught by a different professor. Although this made lectures varied and fresh, students complained that they constantly had to adjust to different teaching styles and levels of difficulty. Each professor used overheads and outlined material in handouts to make lectures clearer and more organized. For the most part, they were enthusiastic and employed lecture styles that were conducive to learning. They were all friendly and approachable during office hours.
The work consisted of 3 tests after each section of the course, one 4 to 6 page paper, and reading assignments which some students felt didn't follow the lectures. In general, students worked 2 to 3 hours each week with an increase in time commitment before tests. However, a recurring complaint was the difficulty in adjusting to each Professor's academic standards and expectations.
Students had the unique opportunity to learn about three fields of Cognitive Science in one semester. A broad and general introduction was given that allows students a means to pursue further classes on the subject that they found most interesting.
For a pain-free and varied introduction to three fields and professors from the Cognitive Science department in the short span of one semester, this class is for you.
