Have you ever driven a car before? Have you ever ridden in a car before? If you answered 'yes' to either of these questions, then 'Technology and Material Culture in America: The Automobile in American Life' is just the class for you.

Professor Malone got rave reviews. His enthusiasm for cars and their impact on American society inspired almost everyone. Students loved his use of slides, music, and films to enhance lectures. Besides multimedia demonstrations, Professor Malone kept students awake during class with his humor and personal stories. Although the class was a large lecture, the professor was always willing to answer questions, and the students found discussion prevalent in sections.

Professor Malone assigned a large amount of reading, but overall, students did not feel that it was necessary to read all of it. Most reviewers spent about two to four hours a week for this course. As well as readings, there was one five to seven-page take-home midterm, a 10 to 15-page research paper, and a final exam. Students found the papers to be very open-ended and flexible, which made them less daunting.

Most people thought this class was very interesting and found they learned a lot without putting in a tremendous amount of work. Attending Professor Malone's enthusiastic lectures seemed to be enough preparation for the final and the papers, for most students. Survey respondents left this course with a better understanding of how the car has impacted American life, and were very pleased that they had taken the course. Many students especially loved their sections and found them to be very helpful.

'If chrome turns you on,' as one student put it, or if you just want to take an interesting, low intensity class, then this course is one in which you should definitely enroll.
