Anyone interested in learning more about the African-American experience should take 'Black Identity in America.' This upper level Am Civ seminar has no prerequisites and is open to anyone who is willing to read and discuss.

In general, students raved about Professor Campbell. His discussion-based classes engaged the class, and he facilitated the conversations well. Students felt that they learned a lot, and with ease, through the discussions and through Professor Campbell's information and insights, which he shared regularly. Occasionally, students felt that he had a tendency to take off on tangents, but this did not seem to interfere with students' overall experiences.

Students felt the workload was manageable in this course. They read about one book per week, but most found the readings to be very interesting and informative, which made for great discussions. There were two papers, a shorter one that was five to seven pages, and a much longer final that was 20 to 25 pages long. Students had very few complaints about the workload, except that they often wished they had more contextual readings to give the many biographies they read a stronger background.

Students advise to take the class and be ready to participate. The reviewers felt that this class was definitely worthwhile. More than just having worked hard, the people in this course thought hard and came away from the course with a more firm understanding of the African-American experience in America. The combination of an inspiring professor, interesting discussions, and thought-provoking readings left almost all of the students feeling as though they had spent their semester well. Professor Campbell did not strictly observe the reading period; he conducted one final class during that week.

If you are looking to find a greater appreciation for race in American, there is no better place to look than Professor Campbell's course. 'Black Identity in America,' a thought provoking, discussion-based class, could be the one for you.
