'The Mathematics of Finance' is a course that focuses on a variety of business and investment skills and strategies. Topics studied include the stock market and the application of relevant formulas to finance. There are no prerequisites for this course but some stated that knowledge of the stock market as well as some statistics would be helpful.
Professor Falb received much praise from the reviewers. He was fun and energetic and facilated much discussion in class. His easy going and interactive attitude was well received by many. However, he did not seem to be very sensitive to the level of understanding of the class, particularly to those with little background in finance. In general though, Professor Falb's lecturing abilities received good reviews.
The courseload was relatively light with students spending an average of three to four hours per week outside of class. Students were divided into groups and required to make weekly presentations on mock investments. There were no written assignments or exams. Generally, students found themselves motivated by both the Professor and a genuine interest in the material studied.
In conclusion, AM194 with Professor Falb is a relatively easy but informative and interesting class. So if you need a fifth or want to complement a hectic semester, or maybe want to learn more about the stock market, 'The Mathematics of Finance' seems like a good way to go.
