'Introduction to Public Health,' taught by Professor Clark, seeks to inform the student about public health issues in the U.S. Respondents emphasized that no background was necessary, although most of the enrollees were concentrators in the department.
The professor was noted as being clear, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. Many remarked on the use of power point slides as an integral part of her lectures. A few respondents, however, commented that the pace of lectures was sometimes a bit fast. But the overwhelming majority enjoyed the lectures completely, as she received both flattering and numerous compliments.
There was a significant amount of complaint as to the excessive quantity of reading assigned, and many also questioned its relevance to the course. The class included a take-home exam, an in-class exam, a final, and a lengthy research paper. In addition, there was a section along with lecture. Students generally spent from one to five hours a week on the course, although many mentioned that the lectures alone were sufficient information to succeed in the class.
Professor Clark did not observe the Reading Period, as she gave two lectures into the week. Despite this, students generally enjoyed both the class material and the professor. Their main and only complaint was that the readings were either to dry and/or too lengthy. On the whole, students enjoyed the course immensely and learned a lot about public health.
So, if you've always wanted to find out just what public health is and how it is relevant to your daily life, take this course. You'll come away from the course feeling better informed and gaining more insight into the U.S. public health system.
