'Microbiology' is a course designed to teach students the concepts underlying microbiology and the techniques which microbiologists use for research. A background in biology is required, such as Bio 20, along with a basic understanding of genetics. Knowledge of fundamental principles of chemistry may prove helpful as well.

Respondents lauded Professor Lederberg for his command of his area of expertise. However, they found his teaching style to be somewhat ineffective and disorganized. His lecture style did not encourage student participation in class, and many students found his lectures difficult to follow because of his unclear speech and his messy handouts. In addition, students criticized the professor for his lack of preparation for both labs and lectures.

The majority of the class members devoted a significant amount of time in the course, averaging 3 to 5 hours per week. The coursework consisted of 2 exams, weekly reading assignments, labs, and a final exam.

If you want to gain an extensive knowledge of microbiology and learn useful lab techniques, take this course. But be ready for a challenging class.
