'Organ Replacement' is a course designed to familiarize students with the range of organ replacement techniques, from tissue engineering to organ transplantation to kidney dialysis. The formal prerequisite for this class was BI 20, 17, 6 or 80, but students also pointed out that some knowledge of engineering could be useful.
Professor Lysaght received excellent reviews from his students. Not only was his lecture style clear and organized, but he distributed photocopies of his lecture notes before class, making it even easier to follow the lectures. Students were motivated by the professor's level of enthusiasm and openness to students' questions and comments. A minority of students, however, complained that Professor Lysaght's lecturing pace was sometimes too fast.
Students devoted, on average, 6 hours per week to this class. The course work consisted of heavy reading assignments, two exams, homework sets, and one final project (making a website). Although students were motivated by the novelty of the subject material, many felt that the professor placed too much emphasis on nitty-gritty facts, which in turn made the exams very difficult to prepare for and to take. Lectures were held during Reading Period.
The vast majority of the class was happy to have taken this class they learned much about today's cutting-edge biotechnology and their application to medicine. Many students were inspired to learn more about new organ transplant technologies and possibly further explore this area of science. Take this class- it's most fascinating!
