'Biomaterials' is a course designed to provide its students with an understanding of prosthetic materials and their use in the human body. The formal prerequisites for this class were BI 20 and BI 80 or BI 28, but students felt that they could certainly have benefited from some knowledge of anatomy, engineering, immunology or physics.

Professor Valentini received mixed reviews from his students. The majority of respondents considered the professor a great lecturer who presented and integrated complicated concepts in a clear, organized manner. They also appreciated the interesting guest lecturers, whose input diversified the subject matter. However, a significant number of students complained that the professor's pace was much too fast and that they had to rely mostly on the teaching assistants for help. Some students were also discouraged by the difficulty of the subject matter and were confused as to what to study for the exam because they felt that the lectures did not complement the reading well.

Respondents indicated that they spent, on average, 7 hours on course work per week. The course load consisted of very heavy reading assignments, one midterm exam, a final exam, one short paper, one long paper and two homework sets. Respondents advised future students to be wary of the once-a-week 3 hour lectures. One class met during Reading Period.

Many students were very glad to have taken this class because they learned much about a compelling field with such immediate and applicable relevance to biomedicine. Some were inspired to be more involved in biomaterials science in the future. But for some students, class wasn't as fantastic as they had hoped. Take this class if you are interested in the subject matter, but be ready to be challenged.
