"African American History, 1876 to the Present" is a lecture course with a section that examines the African-American experience since 1876 from political, social, and economic standpoints, with an emphasis on the implications of this experience on contemporary race relations. No background is necessary for this course, although a few students mentioned that some knowledge of history is useful.
Professor Campbell was praised as a clear and articulate lecturer who was engaging and passionate about the material. Students found his use of lecture outlines to be useful. Students noted that Professor Campbell was very helpful during his office hours. Some respondents suggested that he tried to cover too much material at times, and others were critical of his inability to effectively start discussions. In general, students found their experience with Professor Campbell to be positive.
The requirements for this course included a considerable reading load, two papers of moderate length, and midterm and final exams. Students were pleased with the reading selections, but were discouraged by the fact that their grade was based on just four assignments. Several students suggested that they would have liked the opportunity to write one more paper or have many small assignments instead of a few longer ones.
Students devoted a considerable effort to this course, and most respondents derived their motivation from the interesting readings and the quality of the professor. Students were almost unanimously happy to have taken the course, and several cited the new perspective they had gained from the course as particularly satisfying. Students reported having many opportunities to participate in class, and typically spent between three and five hours per week on this course.
Students with an interest in the history of the African-American experience should certainly consider this course, but students with a more general interest could also find this course valuable. Because of the interesting readings and the quality of the professor, students will probably not be disappointed.
