"The Spy Novel" is a seminar course that introduces students to the spy novel as a literary genre and examines the factual and fictional history of espionage. No background is necessary for this course.

Professor Rosenberg was praised by students as funny, warm, and genuinely interested in the subject of the course. A considerable portion of the class time was devoted to watching films, which had the effect of both limiting the amount of time that Professor Rosenberg spent lecturing and making the class easy in the opinion of most respondents. Some students mentioned that they did not learn a great deal from the videos, but most students seemed to enjoy the format of the course.

The workload for this course consisted of one book each week in addition to two short papers, a midterm paper, and a final paper. Students were quite pleased with the reading assignments, which not surprisingly were from the spy novel genre. The major difficulty that students had with the readings was their inability to find them, as some books were out of print and not available at the bookstore. The students were not particularly pleased with the papers, as some respondents noted that they were not useful in assisting their understanding of the material and thus were not necessary.

Most students were pleased with their overall experience in this course, noting that it was both enjoyable and easy. Students expressed a genuine satisfaction with their understanding of the material, although some believed that they did not learn as much in this course as they might have in others. Respondents reported having many opportunities to participate in class and typically spent between two and three hours per week on this course.

Students looking for a seminar that is both entertaining and easy should definitely consider this course. While this may not be the most rigorous course at Brown, students should enjoy this class and learn something new as well.
