"Introduction to Applied Mathematics I" is a course on differential equations. Requirements for this course include a solid background in math and preparation up to MA 18. A solid calculus background along with linear algebra was also found to be important.

Professor Geman"s approach to teaching AM 33 was very well received. Students commented that he would stop lecturing and go on fun diversions during class. He was easy, organized, and funny. He was quite thorough and an effective lecturer.

Students spent between three and eight hours a week on this course. There were weekly homeworks which weren"t collected, two midterms, and a final. The tests were considered fair and straight forward. Students were honest in saying that the course was not very difficult.

All in all, students seemed to enjoy this course and felt that they had learned some basic applied math principles. One student was happy he took this course because he can now cut a bagel into thirteen pieces with just three cuts.

Geman is a great lecturer and person. He"s even nationally known (his house appears on the show "Providence"). If you want to try a course in the Applied Math department, AM 33 is a pretty safe choice.
