"Honors level Methods of Applied Mathematics I" is not a course for the weak at heart. This course"s emphasis is on learning mathematical methods of problem solving, especially those involved with differential equations. Students said MA 18 was an appropriate prerequisite and added that MA 52 was also valuable.
Applied Math 35 was taught by Professor Dafermos, who received relatively high marks from his students. There were few opportunities to participate in lecture, but almost everyone agreed that he was clear and easy to follow. However, some felt that despite his clearness he was moving too fast throughout the semester.
There were weekly problem sets that were immensely challenging and two short midterms which were considered very tricky. Dafermos was also considered to be too harsh a grader. Students spent between three and eight hours a week on this course, and most agreed that the work was quite tedious. However, people seemed to find this course worthwhile overall.
If interested in physics, this course helps provide a solid foundation for you. Students were motivated by the professor and found the material very interesting. A lot of effort is required, but most did not mind. People were happy to learn applicable skills, all in all.
Most students said that one should take AM 35 over 33 if you want to challenge yourself and learn a lot. However, if you"re scared of the workload, AM 33 might be a better path to follow.
