"Introduction to Numerical Analysis" is a course for Applied Math concentrators and those who really enjoy Math. This course emphasizes computational aspects and analysis of linear algebra. Students were expected to have taken MA 9, MA 10, MA 52, AM 27, and have basic skills in using C/Fortran or MATLAB.

Practically everyone in AM 117 felt that Professor Hesthaven was an effective lecturer. Though some said she would not give enough examples in class, and that it was easy to get lost in her lectures, most students felt the exact opposite, praising the laid back approach the professor followed. However, there was a also general consensus that the course went too fast.

Students spent from 2-12 hours on work for this course. There was one midterm and one take home final exam, with students complaining that the midterm was simply too long. Most respondents felt that the amount of homework assigned was reasonable and noted that they had learned a lot of important practical computing and mathematical skills from this course.

The professor held review sessions during reading period. Some students commented that there were many opportunities for participation in class while others said the exact opposite. Most people wouldn"t have taken it if it were not a requirement, but they still agreed that they did learn a lot from it. This course gave students a chance to learn valuable and applicable programming skills.

The biggest complaint about this course was that it was offered only at nine in the morning. The consensus showed that the professor was pretty solid, and that the material is valuable (and necessary) if planning to major in Applied Math. If it"s not a requirement, and you don"t enjoy programming skills, this probably isn"t the course for you
