"Operations Research: Deterministic Models" was taught by Professor Dupuis, who most considered an effective teacher. Little was required to take this course, except a background in probability and linear algebra. The purpose of this course was to understand methods for solving linear problems.
Professor Dupuis was lauded by his students for being well organized and effective. He gave many examples throughout the lectures and made sure that everyone understood the material before moving on. Everyone agreed that he was a solid person from which to learn.
There was one problem set due a week, one midterm, and one final. The tests were considered very difficult. However, many students thought that this course was relatively easy for an engineering requirement. Students spent between three and ten hours a week on this course, and most seemed to feel that it was worth it.
Students learned a lot from this course and were very happy that they had taken it. It was a challenge, but the material was quite interesting. However, most people were not in this course to broaden their minds, taking this to simply fulfill requirements.
All in all, if you have to take this course you probably won"t hate it. In fact, if you really like math, you will most likely enjoy it. This is just another opportunity to learn from a very talented and clear professor.
