"Ethnicity, Race and Gender in the Americas" seeks to explore the historical and contemporary ethnography of the ideas given in the course"s title. Many topics are discussed, including racism, nationalism, and multiculturalism. No background or previous knowledge of the subject is necessary, "all you need is an open mind" one respondent remarked.

Professor Gutmann received very positive remarks from his class. Many felt that he was an interesting, motivating lecturer, and that he was easy to talk to and approach. Though the class size was over fifty, the professor yielded many opportunities for student contribution, which was much appreciated by the students. Professor Gutmann"s easygoing, informal style seemed to suit the goals of the course very well, and students enjoyed learning while simultaneously having an open forum in which to speak.

The workload was not too heavy for this course, about 4 hours per week. Assignments averaged about one book every two weeks, as well as three papers of ten pages, and a final presentation. Respondents felt that they benefited greatly from the three papers, noting that they were very personal in nature and that no research was required. Readings were also generally interesting, and were comprised mostly of real-life accounts.

On the whole, students were very glad to have taken the course. They felt that both academically and personally, AN 123 opened their eyes to a new way of looking at things. They liked the relaxed feel of the course, and responded to the forum-like atmosphere that pervaded. Respondents urged others to take this class, describing it as an interesting, different classroom experience. The class observed reading period.

If you are interested in the politically charged topics listed above, and like a class where discussion and sharing ideas prevails, then this may be just the course for you. Go in with an open mind, and you should leave with a very new perspective.
