Whether you are a pre-med student or just want some insight into the complex system of health care, "Health and Society ' Health Care in the United States", taught by Professor Rakowski, is for you. This class gives students a basic understanding of health care policy, including terminology, systems, and factors affecting it. This lecture and section class requires no prerequisite knowledge, only an interest in the subject.
Professor Rakowski was, by most accounts, a genuine "nice guy". His enthusiasm, easy-going manner, and corny sense of humor appealed to his students almost as much as his organized lectures and copious overhead slides. These detailed slides made note taking and studying much easier, as they laid out nearly everything the students needed to know in a clear manner. Students were able to ask questions at any time and participation was encouraged during sections.
The workload for this course included two exams, a term paper on a topic covered in class, approximately 40 pages of weekly reading, and a final exam. On average the class attendees devoted a moderate amount of effort to their work and spent about two to five hours per week studying, and slightly more time per week around the term paper due dates and exams. Some students complained that the tests were based too much on pure memorization and others noted that the assigned reading could be tedious and unnecessary. A few protested that the course was too easy. Overall, though, the reviewers were pleased and found the work to be relevant and manageable.
Reading period was not observed, as lectures and reviews were still held. Survey respondents found this course to be a great introduction to health care, as it was practical and not overly taxing. Most of them thought Professor Rakowski was funny and very approachable. They recommended this course in general for its useful information and especially to anyone thinking of a career in health care or medicine.
